“Welcome, gents.” A cocky firefighter stood in front of the assembled guys and two women at the Town Hall in Elmwood. “The auction last year raised $5000 for the Elmwood Burn Unit. That’s not as much as the Vegas one, but we’re a small city down here in the Southern Tier.”

Noah sat in the row of chairs and sensed someone was staring at him. He glanced over his shoulder to see Carson. The guy nodded and Noah gave him a smile. Must be Tommy hadn’t seen him because he would have made a fuss.

“The routine is simple,” the Elmwood guy was saying. “You go out there on the stage at The Grand Hotel and strut around, dance, strip off your turnout coat and/or shirt.”

“Doesn’t sound simple to me.” This from another firefighter from Elmwood. Huh, must be he was drafted too. “I don’t dance, either.”

“Just a few moves, buddy. Let’s watch last year’s YouTube video.” He clicked keys on his computer and soon the gold, black and chrome stage, backdropped by a heavy velvet curtain was lit. The crowd was already roaring, then escalated when the first five firefighters came on stage.

An announcer, dressed in Elmwood’s fire uniform said into the mic, “First off, we have Joey, one of our fan favorites.”

Joey stepped forward and saluted. “Come on Joe, show us your moves.”

Turning to his side, Joe tipped his helmet down and looked at the audience with a smile on his face.

Then he did a shoulder roll and his turnout coat slid off his shoulder. More shoulder action and the gear slithered down in inches finally baring his upper body. It took him a full minute to get the coat off to reveal a bare chest and suspenders holding up his turnout pants.

The audience howled. They watched as four more firefighters were introduced. Then the five got back in a line. “These guys and gals will be out later to be sold off to the highest bidder, but now, we have a series of packages, all firefighter related, to be bid on in the silent auction in the next room.”

Several tables were spread around the space. Draped crepe paper dressed them up along with bunches of flowers.

When the video finished, most people in the room were laughing. Tommy and Noah seemed amused. Adam was stone-faced.

After the meeting ended, they stayed around and talked to some of the Elmwood firefighters and watched Carson socialize. The guy seemed to know the whole crew. Noah waited until he finished talking and turned to leave. He caught up with his friend at the door.

“Hey, Carson.”

At least he stopped.

“Weren’t you even going to say hi to us?”

Carson looked away briefly. “Nope.”

“Are you mad at all of us?”

“I’m done with you, like I said.”

“That’s cold, Carson. Come and have a beer with us tonight.”

He saw something flash in Carson’s eyes. Regret? He shook it off. “No.”

“Your life. Your decision, I guess.”

He turned and walked away.

Tommy and Adam came up to him.

“The fucker left?” Tommy asked.
